For the 1st time OSSC sent all 5 girls teams to a major regional tournament as a club. The Nordic Cup, held in Burlington, VT, welcomes approximately 200 teams from all over the Northeast, as well as Canada, for a weekend of competition. In 2010, three Odyssey girl’s teams went as a group and enjoyed a challenging and successful weekend. I have updates for three of the girls teams, as I get more, I will add them. Overall the 5 girls teams had an excellent showing. The U11 girls team placed 2nd in their division coming home with some beautiful trophies.
On
a hot and sunny weekend in Burlington, Vermont, the U12 girls Odyssey Comets
kicked their way to being undefeated in their bracket and all the way to the
championship game. The ladies came in second place after a tough 3-1 loss to Far
Post. Their accomplishment was a successful blend of teamwork, determination,
skill, grit, outstanding goalkeeping and coaching guidance from the unparalleled
Chris McClain. The weekend started off with a 1-1 tie with the Lusitania Sports
Football Club of Rhode Island. That afternoon Odyssey defeated the powerful New
York Elite from the Albany, NY area 2-1. Sunday would start out with an exciting
3-0 victory over the undefeated AFC Pride of Connecticut followed by a 2-2 tie
against the Capital Soccer Club of Vermont. Odyssey handed NY Elite and AFC
Pride the only losses they would receive in the tournament and with 8 points,
Odyssey would go undefeated in their bracket and face the undefeated Far Post
for the championship. The game was scheduled for the late afternoon with Odyssey
playing their 3rd game of the day while Far Post had only one game early in the
morning. An exciting championship game would see the Comets up 1-0 at halftime.
Fa U19 Girls - There was a lot of anticipation and excitement leading up to the Nordic Cup Tournament. Having just 11 players everyone really had to contribute and at times play out of position. The girls did great! They showed a lot of maturity and soccer savvy by rotating their positions to rest when needed. Our first game was hard fought and the girls put themselves into position to get a result. Unfortunately, we dropped that game 2-1. After a little rest we played in the second game of the day with weather much hotter than I would have anticipated in Vermont! The heat and lack of subs definitely took it's toll but the girls played hard and did some really creative things. I would say the highlight came Saturday at the Odyssey family social. It was great to meet the players and parents of other teams. While I was busy socializing a few of my players and team manager were up to no good. I discovered the next morning they Post-it Noted my ENTIRE car. (I am sure Penni would happily share her pictures). They say it was out of love....well let's just say there were a LOT of little pieces of love on the hood, windshield, windows, roof, hubcaps, and EVERYTHING in between. Sunday's didn't end the way we wanted but the girls played quite well. They put some nice combinations together and really battled. Overall it was great experience and I hope the girls had as much fun as I did.
