Congrats to U12 Boys, 2011 Indoor Champions!

Odyssey’s U12 boys won the indoor championship this April, as a #3 seed.  Winning both the semi-final and final by one goal, it was a dramatic morning of soccer.  In beating the Sauquoit and Rising Stars teams, the U12s defeated a team they previously tied (Sauquoit, 1-1) and lost to twice (Rising Stars by a combined score of 10-2).  The Sauquoit game finished 2-1, with Odyssey never trailing in the game.  The final versus Rising Stars saw the Odyssey boys trail not once but twice, each time coming back to tie the score.  With 20 seconds or so left in regulation, the score tied at two apiece, Odyssey took a throw-in from midfield.  Eamon Bollinger threw the ball smartly down the line to Jared George, who had made a clever run from the far side of the field.  Jared looked like he might get stuck in the corner as time expired, but made a terrific move and broke past the defender to take a shot at the near post which beat the goalkeeper with mere seconds to play.

Coach Stinson was very proud of his team, saying, “From Max Babowicz, who had a huge morning in goal for us, to Jared as he scored the final goal, all our guys played very, very well.  Every boy played in both games, and in such close contests, it was important to be able to rest players without losing our edge in the game.”  Ultimately, the Odyssey boys were able to endure a close final due to the depth of the team, “Playing two games back to back is tough, especially for young guys like these,” Coach said, “but each boy did his job well, and allowed us to take a lot more energy into the final than our opponent, and that may well have been the difference there at the very end as Eamon and Jared combined for the goal.”

The U12 boys open outdoor play on April 27th.

U19 Boys Drop Heartbreaker In Indoor Semis

Despite a second place finish in the regular season with an 8-2 record, the fewest goals against and the highest goal differential, the U19 boys tripped up against Sauquoit in the semi-finals last weekend.  Three quick, early goals put the team too far behind to recover, despite pulling a goal back in the second half.

Coach Stinson summed the game up by saying “We made a couple mistakes early in the game, giving the ball away under pressure in our half, a problem we’ve been working on all year.  Once we got our focus back and began hitting our front runner with better service, we had more success; Connor Lomonaco and Jerod Gibson both hit the woodwork, Travis Regner missed a close-range chance that on any other day he’d finish.  It was a bit of unlucky stuff like that, although we should have finished some of the good chances we created.”

Outdoor for the U19s begins near the end of May, and good things are expected from this group.  It was a fine season for the boys, and while the semi-final loss dampens the enjoyment a bit, the club is very proud of this group for their efforts this winter.  Considerable talent makes up the team, and the improvement has been noticeable on a weekly basis.  The group regularly takes advantage of Friday night pick up games at the Odyssey facility and that extra effort has shown.
