Chris White, recently hired by the Colgate Women's Soccer program to take over GK training responsibilities, as well as serve as Assistant Coach, will be joining me in upgrading the GK training program.  Chris played GK at Colgate in the late 90's, and brings a wealth of GK and soccer experience to both the Colgate and Odyssey programs.  As usual in life, there is some downside to these new developments, but we at OSSC believe the costs are far outweighed by the benefits.

Another Chris (Miller), a senior at Colgate, will also join the GK program at OSSC this January when he returns from winter break.  His experience and eagerness to learn a bit about the other half of the player-coach relationship will bring energy and knowledge, as well as yet another fine role model, to the Odyssey programming line-up.

Training may be divided by age group should the numbers support such a move.  Such details will be resolved as registrations are received/confirmed.

The GK program will remain open to both OSSC members and non-members, but will no longer be a free service (as it was the previous two years).  OSSC members can participate for ~$300 and non-members for ~$475.  Even for non-members, the volume of training makes the fee quite low.  The plan is as follows:

  • Sessions will begin in January, and run through June, with a grand total of 26 weeks (less time off for break weeks) or approximately 35-40 sessions.
  • Two training sessions per week, one run by me, the other by Coach White.  Chris Miller will be at both sessions each week.
  • Guest coaches, Eric Watson (Utica College Men's Coach) and Phil Wheddon (Syracuse University Women's Coach) will stop by twice each to run a session and provide a little different approach to the position.
  • New field turf in the training facility will allow enhanced training (versus the old surface upon which diving was not encouraged).
  • Negotiations are in progress to acquire discounts to various GK camps and clinics for participants, details to be released ASAP.

This program is the finest possible environment for a young GK in the nation.  The quality of the coaches (if I may shamefully pump my own tires) is as good as it gets, the guest coach situation is unbeatable, the fees extraordinarily low for the quality and volume, and outside of USSF Development Academy situations via MLS clubs, simply cannot be matched by any organization in the United States.  All of OSSC is very proud to be able to offer this service, and our GK corps will certainly benefit.
