 Frequently asked questions

What is 'club' soccer?
Club soccer is an association of players for the purpose of playing competitive soccer. Club soccer teammates can live in different towns and cities.

How often do teams practice?
That depends on the coach. Our teams have a goal of twice a week during spring and summer and twice a week indoors during the winter. In addition we offer goalkeeper training once per week at an additional charge during the outdoor season.

Who trains them?
Odyssey Soccer coaches are Nationally licensed!  All are superior with youngsters.

Can I still play with my town team?
Yes.

Will I have to quit my other activities?
No.
We make it a priority to arrange practices conveniently. If there are conflicts they tend to work out. If you miss practice occasionally because of a scheduling conflict we know that you will be there when you can because we are going to make it enjoyable. You do have to take your commitment to the club seriously and be at practice with your teammates as often as possible.  We request that you commit to attending 50% of your training sessions and if you can not attend your age bracket, try to attend a similar age bracket (boys or girls).  The only thing we ask is that a U12 does not attend a U19 practice or vice versa.  Coaches appreciate an email from the player him/herself to let them know they will not be able to attend a practice.

Is the league too competitive?
No.

What if we go away as a family on a scheduled tournament weekend such as Memorial Day or Columbus Day?
We can live with that.

Is there a lot of traveling?
It depends. There are an average of 4 - 5 league away games per year plus tournament(s). You can count on a few 'mid week drives' but most of the games are relatively local. As the teams get older and need to travel to find a competitive tournament the chance for travel increases somewhat. As teams get stronger travel will increase.

What might a typical club soccer year look like?
Competitive teams might have a year that looked something like this:
  • 1-2 weekly outdoor training sessions beginning in late April
  • 8-10 games spring or summer season - practice 1-2 times per week
  • 1-2 tournaments for most teams
  • 1-2 training sessions/week December through March
  • 8-10 Indoor games at an indoor facilities
  • State Cup Tournament for qualified teams
  • Additional outdoor tournaments  (Coaches option)

Where do the teams practice?
As we do not currently have our own facility, we are training at the Gyms in Sherrill (CAC), Wampsville (OSMS Middle school) and Verona (BOCES).  Our current outdoor fields are the OSMS Middle school field in Wampsville and JV Field at Oneida HS.

Why should we play for Odyssey instead of another club?
Good question !
Our coaches are excellent! Having coached State champion teams, coaching at the collegiate level, former players having gone on to play at the college level..., many All-scholastic players, all-star players, many Odyssey players are the  captains of their high school team. We can give players their best chance to excel in the sport. The two most important reasons? Our players develop properly and efficiently and have a high level of enjoyment.

Why play club soccer?

In addition to the fun players have they will be playing with and against very good players in the most challenging youth league in the state. Players develop increased confidence and self esteem. Players meet new friends. Tight bonds and camaraderie develop. They will be preparing for high school play and beyond. Players who can compete in well with Odyssey will likely excel in high school play. Odyssey coaches will pick up on player's bad habits early and correct them before they become ingrained. Odyssey players learn how to play the game correctly and have fun doing it.

Don't players get cut from club teams?
Yes.
We would rather face torture than cut one of our players. We consider that to be a drastic step. We would first make every effort to improve the player. It doesn't happen often.  There is always the training option if that were to happen as well.

What if I am committed to another club already?
Feel free to talk to us at any time but the Odyssey will not entice a player from
another club. Our club has tryouts in August.
