As outdoor soccer looms large (hopefully just around the corner!) a new and very exciting development has occurred. The town of Vernon has preliminarily granted Odyssey Sport sole usage rights to an excellent field located directly behind the Vernon Town Offices (2.5 miles from the indoor facility, adjacent to William Wettel Elementary School). Town Supervisor, Myron Thurston, Elected Representative Gene Bennati, and Elected Representative Michael “Mick” McDonough met with Dion Roman, OSSC’s de facto fundraising officer and staff coach, Paul Stinson Monday, March 21st and agreed to initial terms of agreement for using the field. As soon as the club can arrange practice times and for goals and lines to be placed on the field, the teams will move to this new site (weather permitting). The field is a perfect location, just a turn off of Rt. 5, with a pavilion with bathrooms, picnic tables and a half-mile walking track around the field. Ample parking and the eventual ability to develop all the playing areas are included, pending a successful first year of cooperation. Happily, there is storage for balls, cones, pinnies and corner flags, eliminating the hassle of coordinating the sharing and locating of all our gear. The town of Vernon likes very much the idea of the field being used as heavily as the walking track around it, and is happy to have OSSC Junior Academy, Mini-Kickers and Goalkeeper training all running concurrently with the 10 competitive teams training sessions and games. The AYSO relationships OSSC has established the past couple winters, renting the indoor facility to AYSO for an extremely reasonable fee will be able to continue now in the outdoor months, particularly in the fall. Being able to increase the club’s ability to lend assistance to programs like AYSO in our communities is an ideal way to grow the game and keep many kids playing in great environments and enjoying healthy, active lifestyles. The club is appreciative of the Town Representatives support of the programming Odyssey offers; like the many volunteers and supporters from around all the communities who have and continue to support the club’s mission, the town of Vernon is confirming the value of what we do as an organization. It is a vote of confidence that Odyssey will strive continuously to justify. More details will be released as the club shifts to outdoors operations. |
